 “Continue steadfastly in prayer,”

    Colossians 4:2

From early in scripture, man began to call upon the name of God. Throughout history, patriarchs, priests, prophets, and all of God's children have done so.

Prayers arose in temples, in the belly of a whale, with the dawn, and at midnight—for mercy, forgiveness, adoration, and thanksgiving.

Some prayers were silent; others were uttered with tears and groans. God's people prayed alone and in groups, from palaces and prisons. Our Lord Himself prayed.

Scripture testifies to countless prayers, thanks, and intercessions. Let us then continue with the great cloud of witnesses who came before us, being steadfast in prayer and trusting God to hear us always.

“ Man ate the bread of angels; he sent them food in abundance.”

   Psalm 78:25

God fed His children with bread from heaven as they wandered in the wilderness. This merciful provision came to them daily except on the Sabbath, reminding them of their dependence on Him.

In Christ, we have a greater bread given unto us in Himself. Just as the children of the wilderness depended daily on God's provision, we too should seek His daily provision. The mercies of God are made new for us each day. Let us take the bread of God found in scripture so that we will be sustained in our wilderness. God has promised to be with us and to lead us into the promise of eternity.

As we enter a new year, Christ has made the way for us, and in Him we have the assurance of God’s goodness and mercy keeping us. Though we do not know what the new year will bring, we can be certain of this: God is for us, and we have the Bread of Life in Christ.

“Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

  Revelation 22:20

With the dawning of another year at hand, let us not relent in looking upward. The coming of the Lord would not appear soon by our estimation, but He is not delayed. For at the right time Christ laid down His life for us. The second coming of Christ has its precise time, which God alone knows.

Until then, let us live intentionally for the glory of God by seeking daily fellowship with Him in prayer, scripture, and love for others. Remember, the Holy Spirit dwells within us, uniting us to Christ and the Father. Let us find our comfort in this truth throughout our lives and as we face death.

Let us encourage one another with the hope of eternal union with Christ and with all who trust in Him. As we wait, we actively anticipate His coming by remaining steadfast in faith and love. Even so, come quickly.
