Deeply Rooted | Sep. 27th

"Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away."

" And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away."

Mark 4:5-6, 16-17

One of my summer jobs in my teen years was working for a construction landscape company. The company built stone walls and installed lawns in new home developments. In most cases soon after a home was framed and finished on the outside we would put in the lawn. Surrounding the house would be processed stone or packed hard soil. We would come and cover the ground with a few inches of loam, good soil, then that would be graded and seeded or sod put down. Eventually, you will have a nice green lawn. If the loam were too thin, the grass would burn and die when exposed to the sun.

Beloved, if we are shallow in our knowledge of God and His word then we do not have the spiritual roots deep enough to endure the trials of life. Some immediately receive the word of God with joy but it does not become a part of their everyday life and when life becomes difficult their faith withers away.

Jesus explained that " they had no root in themselves" even though there was immediate joy when the word was first heard. Be not only a hearer of God's word but a doer. May the word of God take root in your heart and mind so that when the storms of life come you can stand. Yield your heart to the Sower today and grow in the grace of God.

In Christ Alone,
